Women and Leadership: A Political Discussion.
“That monarch is first a woman; this woman is first a monarch”
Glenda
Jackson in her portrayal of Elizabeth I referring to Mary Queen of Scots in the
1971 film, Mary, Queen of Scots
The Passion Project Co-op is pleased to invite you to a political discussion on
Thursday, September 13th at
9:30 p.m. following the 8 p.m. showing of The Passion of Mary, by Annette
Loiselle. The discussion will take place at the Roxy Theatre (10708 – 124 Street), and will be hosted by Paula Simons from the Edmonton Journal.
Guests Laurie Blakeman, Ashley Casovan,
Linda
Sloan, Sue Huff , Rachel Notley, and Danielle Smith, will discuss the complexities of being a woman in a
leadership role.
Reaching
beyond party lines, the above quote will serve as a jumping off point for the
discussion, as the panel examines what it means to be strong women of vision with
a passion toward politics. The Passion of Mary mirrors the
lives of contemporary women leaders who must negotiate their womanliness,
struggle to remain equal partners, esteemed and respected leaders, all while
attempting not to be discounted by the familial choices they make. In
Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary we see one woman who denies her femininity in
order to rule, and the other embracing the passions within her, but being
unable to rule as a result.
The Passion
of Mary
takes place as Mary Queen of Scots awaits her fate in an English castle where
she has been imprisoned for 18 years. As the chopping block for her execution
is waiting to be set, she still holds out hope for a pardon from Queen
Elizabeth. More then anything, Mary needs redemption not just for the sins she
has been accused of, but for the sin she has yet to confess…….until now.
Featuring Siân Williams
and playwright Annette Loiselle, the
creative team
is led by director Glenda Stirling. The
rest of the artistic team is rounded out with production designer Bretta
Gerecke, music composer Binaifer Kapadia, sound designer Paul
Morgan Donald and production stage manager Gina Puntil. The
production runs from September 6-16,
2012 at the Roxy Theatre, as part of Theatre
Network’s Performance Series.

Caught
in an act of treason carried out by loyal followers, Mary Queen of Scots awaits
her fate in an English castle where she has been imprisoned for 18 years. As
the scaffolding is built, and the chopping block for her execution is waiting
to be set, she still holds out hope for a pardon from Queen Elizabeth. As a
Queen was she foolish to desire motherhood? Was she reckless to fall in love? Can she truly be faulted for ruling more with her
heart than her head? In imagined red wine sessions with Elizabeth, these
questions are debated as Mary sets out to prove she is not a murderer, but a
woman of passion and a leader of vision. More then anything, Mary needs
redemption not just for the sins she has been accused of, but for the sin she
has yet to confess…….until now.
As the first production to hit the boards this fall, The
Passion of Mary officially launches Edmonton’s 2012/13 season. In addition, the Passion
Project is please to announce the return of actor Sian Williams after a 10-year hiatus. Williams, an established
actor who used to be seen regularly on Edmonton stages, will play Elizabeth
along with many other roles, and Free Will’s Annette Loiselle will play the Scottish Queen herself. The creative
team is led by director Glenda Stirling, returning to Edmonton before beginning
work as Associate Artistic Director for Calgary’s Lunchbox Theatre. The rest of
the talented artistic team is rounded out with multi-award winning production
designer Bretta Gerecke, music composer Binaifer Kapadia, sound
designer Paul Morgan Donald and production stage manager Gina Puntil.
A
special fundraising night for One Thousand Women, A Million Possibilities,
will be held on Friday September 7, while another fundraiser will be held for
Loiselle’s other creative endeavor, SkirtsAFire: herArts Festival,
on Saturday September 8. Previews will be held on September 4 and 5, 2012.
